NYSC Composer, Adetiran Dies At 74

Dr. Oluwole Adetiran, the nan who composed the NYSC Anthem is dead.

He was aged 74.

He died on Friday May 6, 2022 at the age of 74.

His death was confirmed by multiple members of Celestial Church of Christ (CCC), which he was a member.

According to his daughter, Mrs. Tolulope Adetiran-Isaiah, the musicologist died at about 3pm on Friday, May 2022.

The Ogun State NYSC Coordinator, Dr Belinda Faniyi, also confirmed the news, stating that she was about to inform the Director-General about the news.

“The LGI just informed me (about the death) so I’ll let DG know,” she said

The 74-year-old was in July 2021 visited by the NYSC Director-General, Ibrahim Shuaibu, at his house in Ibafo, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

He lamented that he had been suffering from diseases, including hypertension, diabetes and prostate cancer since 2018.

Adetiran, who studied music at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, recalled that he composed the anthem in 1984 while he was a corps member in Oyo State.

The NYSC Anthem lyrics goes thus:

“Youths obey the clarion call

“Let us lift our nation high

“Under the sun or in the rain

“With dedication and selflessness

“Nigeria is ours, Nigeria we serve.
