A Retired Nutritionist and Dietician from the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan Mrs Mobolaji Subulade has advised Nigerians to imbibe food safety practices in the preparation, handling and storage of foods to prevent food borne diseases.

Mrs Subulade gave the advice while speaking on Pensioners’ Fm’s Programme TRENDING to mark this year’s World Food Safety Day with the theme ´safer food, better health.

According to Mrs Subulade maintaining food safety helps in keeping diseases and infectious illnesses, which are caused by unhygienic food.

She identified regular hand washing, cleansing of cooking utensils as some of the factors that promotes food safety                                                     

 She said” the health status of the person would be in danger if safety is not put into concern when preparing food”

Mrs Subulade harped on the need for Nutritionists and food experts to team up with environmental officials to monitor food sold at market places

She said that “Enivironmental officers must not relent in ensuring that food sold by Food Vendors are prepared in a neat environment.”

 Mrs Subulade called on government to embark on massive health campaign to sensitize both the public and food vendors on importance of food safety.

World Food Safety Day is celebrated every 7th of June to raise awareness and motivate action to avoid, identify, and manage food borne hazards.
