After weeks of expectation, Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners has finally held a mega rally in support of Governor Seyi Makinde’s re-election.

Traditional music and dancing heralded the carnival-like event as pensioners, adorning their colourful dresses, stormed the Oyo State Government House for the solidarity Mega Rally.

At about few minutes past 10 am, Governor Makinde, who was said to have flown in from Port Harcourt, made his arrival. He went straight to his office where he spent about 10 minutes before coming out to receive the pensioners.

In an address, Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Oyo State Council, Comrade Olusegun Abatan, thanked the governor for his gesture to the retirees, saying they have been the greatest beneficiaries in the three years of the governor’s administration.

“It has been a fantastic partnership in the last three years. Pensioners have been resurrected from the death like Jesus rose from the tomb. In the last three years that you have been in charge you can see how fresh and happy the pensioners now look. We are here to appreciate you for all that you have done for the retirees in Oyo State. You have indeed distinguished yourself from other emperor governors around.”

Thereafter, shorts prayers were said for the governor by Christians, Muslims and traditional worshippers among the pensioners before the union handed a copy of the document containing a list of request from the pensioners to the governor.

In a response, Governor Makinde who spoke in Yoruba Language expressed appreciation for the solidarity rally and reassured the retirees of his commitment to their welfare.

The Governor also expressed confidence that with God and the people on his side, he will be re-elected for a second term in 2023.

While the governor was addressing the pensioners, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, who is also a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, arrived the Government House and joined the governor on stage.

Senator Saraki, who also spoke in Yoruba, thanked the pensioners for appreciating Governor Makinde, promising to take a cue from the governor and prioritize the welfare of pensioners if he is elected President.

Oyo State Commissioners for Establishment and Training, Alhaji Siju Lawal, whose ministry is in charge of pensioners, told pensioners FM that the show of solidarity would further boost the chances of the governor in 2023.

“You can see the crowd here. It shows how much they appreciate what this administration has been doing for them. It is indeed a thing of joy to see how happy they are. This shows how much the people love the governor”.

Some of the retirees who spoke with a team of Pensioners FM were full of gratitude to the governor whom they say has turned their fortune around in just three years.

The state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Chief Isiaka Abolade, the Assistant Secretary, Comrade Banji Koleosho, the union’s auditor, Alhaja Idiat Oladiti and other state executive members were also present.

The Governor was billed to head to Shasha Market in Ibadan, after the rally, for the reopening of the rehabilitated market which was shut down on February 13, 2021 following a violent clash between Yoruba and Hausa ethic groups.
