Retirees in the South-West have vowed to vote against any governor owing pensions and gratuities in the forthcoming 2023 general election.

Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Union of Pensioners, South-West Zone, Comrade Olusegun Abatan, stated this while speaking with newsmen shortly after a meeting of retirees in Abeokuta.

Comrade Abatan, who also doubles as the Secretary of NUP in Oyo State, explained that salaries and emoluments of public office holders should be reduced, said that the country’s presidential system of government should be restructured.

According to him, South-West governors owe pensioners trillions of naira stating that increment in salaries across the federation has not been fully implemented by some State in the Southwest zones.

Comrade Abatan called on state governments in the zone to as a matter of urgency hold consultation with pensioners and do the needful.

Comrade Abatan also called for the establishment of a ministry for the elderly in each of the six states of the zone.

He said this has become necessary due to the neglect of pensioners.

The Oyo state scribe enjoined states council of NUP in the southwest to hold consultations and possibly organize street protests to press home their demands.
